Most important meeting of the past few years

Well, in about 10 minutes my workgroup at the college is sitting down with the college’s President to discuss our future here at the college. Wish me luck, hopefully my status will be settled at the conclusion of the meeting, one way or another, and I can stop worrying about what’s going to happen.

Well….it went ok. No one else would do it so I asked the big question ‘is our division being eliminated,’ and he gave as frank an answer as he could, which was ‘there will still be some group doing work like what you do at this college when we are done with all this reorganization.’

No guarantee of a future position, but some semblance of a guarantee that a position doing what I do will still exist. So I’m somewhat more confident that I will still have a job. What it all relies on is this CIO position they are hiring – it is clear that the president is going to be relying on this position to help him figure out the college’s medium term IT strategy, and if this person comes in and doesn’t take a shine to me, or my division, I think all bets are still off, but what became clear from today’s conversation is that the president does have a comittment to educational technology at the college.

Short version, there’s more hope than before.

Yeah…still the uncertainty, which does suck. I forgot to mention the other thing, which was he did look me in the eye and say something along the lines of ‘so if you are asking me if you should be looking for a job, well, I wouldn’t, I would stick tight, after all this is done there will still be interesting work for you to do here.’ Which was encouraging. Still no guarantee, but about as close as he could come to saying I would still have a job. So I do feel a lot more confident about it.

(btw, that was a total paraphrase, he didn’t really say it that way; he’s an accomplished lawyer and definitely speaks in lawyer-speak. The above is my translation of what he said)

Did he look at you, or was he checking out your ass?
“Yes Dave, interesting work indeed ”

I would think that to possibly combat a negative CIO you need to drum up support from the faculty who use your department, no? Do they have a voice here at all?

Either way, hang in there. Worse comes to worse, we can always buy a truck and some mowers and return to our roots πŸ˜‰

Noooooo! No more mowing for me, I had enough of that life trust me πŸ˜‰

My boss is trying to get the faculty on our side, according to him he’s doing pretty well on that front, we’ll see I guess.
