Dave’s Place gets hacked

Well, sort of maybe. When I got back from Seattle I seemed to have no bandwidth, my net connection was slower than a modem. An hour or so of investigation led me to the web server’s access log, where I discovered everyone and his brother downloading music from my supposedly private collection of mp3’s. A little more digging and I discover a set of web pages with hundreds of links to free music downloads, including MANY to my server. I’m not sure how they got the links – I’ve been using Andromeda to stream the mp3 files to my work machine and to my living room media box. I’m not aware of any hacks to Andromeda, though it’s entirely possible they exist. It’s also possible it was simply an issue of the google spider indexing my music directories and someone having the patience to google my domain for mp3 files, off the cuff I’m not sure if andromeda protects about that, and I know for a fact that I stupidly did not create a robots.txt file to exclude the music directory from spiders. So…one way or another this was probably my fault, it still sucked though. The worst thing is the fear that the RIAA knows of this and a subpena is on its way even as I type. I don’t know for how long I was exposed in this way; I do know I had been having intermittent bandwidth and particularly latency problems prior to christmas, so its possible and even likely that this has been going on for months. ugh. Anyway a quick change on the permissions of the music directory and the would be pirates are now getting 404 errors (you should see my logs). If you’re from the RIAA and you’re investigating, trust me, I didn’t do this on purpose, and I own legitimate copies of the music I’ve transcoded and stored on my server. Please go away and pick on someone else 😉

An interesting aside – Pink Floyd was the overwhelming choice of the pirates, like 80% of them were grabbing Pink Floyd, particularly older stuff like Umma Gumma and A Momentary Lapse of Reason. At least they have interesting and refined taste.

I’m back from vacation

I’m back after three weeks and a day of vacation. All in all I had a great time. I spent a week in Seattle, spent several days on a redesign of this site, installed several new software packages on the server, upgraded several others, read 3 novels, watched at least 10 movies, and slept more than I have in months. Today it’s back to the grind, with a full work schedule due to the impending start of a new semester. I’ll start talking about some of the new stuff over the course of this week as time permits.

Testing new design

Just testing to see if the new design is working, I think I’ve made a bad mistake in the templates.

[update]. Yep. Bugs. More than I thought, stupid IE. Some of these bugs will persist for a little while as I work through the most important issues one by one. Anyway let me know what you think of the new look if you’re so inclined. And again I plead, ditch IE and use a better browser, mozilla is tops these days but anything is preferable to IE.

Outliner lovefest

I’ve been a fan of outliners ever since I stumbled across More while I was in college. Many a paper was written with More and later the MS Word outliner. I’ve had a fetish for them ever since. Today I got caught on an outliner meme and turned up some pretty cool stuff which I’ve collected as links. For anyone who needs a little free-form data storage tool that has a small memory footprint , take s moment to check outsome outliners. Links:

The other interesting area of development is tying outline editors to wikis: I have great hopes for this class of software though so far nothing is to the point where I can really use it. I might manage to get a set of Leo templates going to manage this for me but I would prefer a turnkey solution. If you’re on a mac, you can check out the first halting steps towards this kind of system.

Free fps

A group of developers has been working on what is essentially a tribes clone. It’s free for the download and since it’s based on the versatile Torque engine it should ultimately be available for PC, Mac and Linux. I played around with it this morning. For a free game it’s definitely worthy though the maps are a little bland and not every weapon seems to have sound yet. I may play around with this and get a server running at work just for something to test with. Worth checking out if you’re a fps junkie like me.

So says a wag on slashdot…

…after someone tried to use the number of hits on a particular term on google:

[original quote]And I can also search for “liberal satan ass cream” and I get results too, over 2000 in fact.

[followup]Without commenting on the validity any opnions regarding the justification of the war, that is the best rebuttal of google evidence I’ve ever seen.

Cracked me up. Have to agree with the second guy, too; you can’t use the number of results on a particular search term as evidence of much. You can search on pretty much anything and get thousands of hits.

New website feature

I’ve installed two very handy new utilities on daves-place. First of all, my own instance of sitebar, which is an excellent server-based utility for managing your bookmarks. I regularly use 5 different computers and trying to keep track of where I have a particular link is a major hassle for me. My hope is sitebar can solve this problem. You can access my copy here, and if you use the help link at the bottom it will show you how to install the system as a sidebar in your browser, or at least in browsers that support such things, like mozilla.

The other thing I now have up and running is my own teamspeak server. This is mostly for gaming with friends, but it can also be used for the equivalent of internet telephony. Pretty soon I’m going to start leaving myself logged in as a test to see who will actually log in on a regular basis and say hello. Mind you this is PC only for now, and you need to get in touch with me for an account. They’re working on porting the client to other platforms, wander over to their forums and encourage them if you’re so inclined. Teamspeak has become the defacto clan gaming voicechat app over the last year and a half. Oh, the address for the teamspeak server is this site’s domain.

A very clever game

The Independent Games Festival has announced this year’s contest finalists. There are several games worth checking out, but Bontago takes the prize as far as I’m concerned. Realistic physics, very clever design, excellent graphics, and multiplayer, all for the low low price of $0. I would have paid $15-20 for this game, and still will if the developer releases it commercially. Who’s up for a game?

(don’t skip checking out Starshatter though, I have high hopes for this one too).

Cool, novel gift idea

Remember Sea Monkeys, from the back of comic books when you were a kid? I actually had some when I was around 8 or 9. I remember being tremendously disapointed that my sea monkeys didn’t look like the jovial family unit the ad had promised but still, I had some fun with them way back in the day. These are basically sea monkeys for adults, in an attractive sealed glass container. I confess, I’d really like to have one of these for my office, even though they are fairly pricey. Still, I might splurge after christmas and get myself some.

Moist cinnamon burps

Gross right? Yet that’s me these days. It’s all because of this research. This is to my knowledge the first clinical proof of this, though it’s been sort of folk wisdom that this works prior to this study. So now twice a day I eat a quarter of a teaspoon of cinnamon. We’ll see at the end of January whether it helps. Oh and the burps? To be honest they’re actually kind of pleasant 😉
