Super handy software

Got multiple machines running multiple operating systems? Wish you could afford one of those killer USB KVM switches from Belkin so you could run all the machines off of a single keyboard and mouse? Turns out there’s a workable software solution to this issue, Synergy. It’s got less overhead than VNC and unlike Timbuktu, PC Anywhere and so on, it’s free. Runs on Win32, Linux and OSX.

I realized I didn’t sufficiently describe the software. It isn’t really a KVM replacement, in that each machine still requires a monitor – it just lets you dispense with multiple keyboards and mice. For someone like me, with three monitors and 3 OS’s running on their desk, this becomes extremely useful. Plus you can copy and paste between OS’s, another handy feature.
